On
Wal*Mart ...
During BSA camp we made a
run to town one evening - kind of a shooting sports staff bonding
thing.
The range directors all have radios, and we were dispersed into
several vehicles as some of us had different stops to make. We
agreed to meet in the Wal*Mart parking lot. So, as one could
imagine, my call sign was `Shotgun' ... and my other two directors'
call signs were `Archery' and `Rifle'.
I arrived last
to the parking lot, and so climbed onto the radio and called for my
buddies ("Shotgun to Archery, Rifle ... what's your location?").
Well,
instead of getting them - I got a response "Hey, let's not use
weapons for call signs." I was a bit taken back - I
thought - what the ... we've
been using these (call signs) all summer long - and
then I realized we must be on someone else's channel. So I
called, "This is `Shotgun' - whose channel have I come on to?"
I got the response, "Wal*Mart Security Channel." I
responded, "Our shotguns and rifles and stuff are `firearms',
not weapons, ... we just need to come into your store and shop
for a bit; don't worry, it's okay."
After we did our shopping and were
clearing the parking lot - I got back on and reported, "Wal*Mart
Security - this is Shotgun - we are done shopping and are clear of
your premises."
One of my staff - who is also in the mil,
said I became his hero that day.
