I'm not going to say as to whether you should filter, or not filter. Who knows? ... maybe the stream you pass along the trail looks good enough ... cascading down from uninhabited regions above, and you decide not to filter ... only to find out afterward just a few yards upstream there is a dead horse in the creek. (Been there done that ... and still alive to talk about it.)
